Heaven and Yoro receive extra defensive coaching at Carrington

Jonny Evans has been taking Ayden Heaven, 19, and Leny Yoro, 20, for extra individual work at Carrington as he passes on his experience to the young Manchester United centre-backs, according to Manchester Evening News reporter Tyrone Marshall.

Evans is one of two former Premier League centre-backs on Michael Carrick’s coaching staff, alongside Jonathan Woodgate. Woodgate joined the club after working with Carrick at Middlesbrough and previously played for Real Madrid, Leeds and Newcastle. Evans made 241 appearances for United across two spells and retired at the end of last season.

Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez emerged as Carrick’s first-choice centre-back pairing in his opening two games in charge, while Matthijs de Ligt was sidelined by injury. In United’s wins over Manchester City and Arsenal, Heaven played one minute and Yoro was an unused substitute in both matches.

Extra work at Carrington

Heaven told the club’s Inside Carrington podcast that he and Yoro have completed extra work with Evans after some sessions, focusing on the basics of defending. He also said Evans and Woodgate offer guidance on positioning during training drills.

The defender described the two coaches as a significant help and said their experience in the game gives him an opportunity to learn. Woodgate also shares his experience with the young defenders during regular sessions.

Coaching support for Heaven and Yoro

The work gives Heaven and Yoro access to two coaches who played as centre-backs in the Premier League. Evans has experience of playing for United across two spells, while Woodgate’s career included time in England and Spain.

Heaven and Yoro are currently behind the pairing used in Carrick’s first two games, but the additional training offers both players further support as they continue to develop. Heaven’s account of the sessions indicates that the pair are working with Evans and Woodgate on positional details as well as the fundamentals of the role.

What the recent selections show

Maguire and Martinez were Carrick’s first-choice centre-back partnership in his first two matches in charge, with de Ligt unavailable through injury. That left Heaven and Yoro in reserve for the victories over Manchester City and Arsenal.

For Heaven and Yoro, the extra sessions with Evans and the guidance provided by Woodgate form part of their work within Carrick’s coaching setup at Carrington.
